In this blog post, let me describe how we create a functional, beautiful, and practical workspace for everyday use.
When I first walked into this home office, it was a blank canvas. The room still had some dated corner built-ins and heavy shutters that immediately felt out of place. My client asked me to transform it into a functional workspace that was not only beautiful, but also practical for everyday use — a place that could serve as a backdrop for Zoom calls, host a quiet moment of focus, or even welcome a guest for a casual conversation.
The first step was rethinking the layout. I designed a custom built-in to anchor the desk wall, complete with carefully selected artwork to create an elegant and inspiring background for video calls. This feature became both the focal point of the room and a source of organization and storage, balancing beauty and utility.
Technology integration was another priority. I added floor outlets and designed the desk with hidden cord channels, so every cable disappears into the desk unit and under the rug. The result? A workspace completely free of visible wires — clean, uncluttered, and serene.
From there, we layered in materials and finishes. A neutral palette with rich, darker tones set the mood, while floor-to-ceiling drapery softened the light and added a sense of luxury. We combined the client’s own artwork with new pieces to create a cohesive collection, infusing the space with personal meaning.
Lighting also played a big role. The original chandelier was replaced with a striking new fixture that illuminates upward, providing a more comfortable environment for the eyes. To enhance functionality, we added four recessed lights, giving the client flexible lighting scenarios throughout the day.
Finally, comfort was key. We introduced a custom-sized 100% wool rug to ground the room and added two guest chairs opposite the desk. Together with a sleek bar console in the corner, these touches make the office more than a place to work — it’s also a space to sit with a spouse, share a drink with a friend, or even interview a new babysitter or housekeeper.
The transformation of this office shows how a well-designed space can do so much more than house a desk. It can reflect personality, support productivity, and create an atmosphere where both work and life feel balanced and elevated.
