Why Cosmetic Renovations Are My Favorite Projects

In this blog post, I share why I love cosmetic renovations with custom decorating projects

As an interior designer, I find that some of the most rewarding projects are cosmetic renovations - the kind of work where we transform a home into a true luxury experience without tearing it down to the studs. These projects allow me to elevate a space to an entirely new level through furnishings, finishes, and décor, and I love them for so many reasons.

Faster Timelines, More Excitement

Large-scale “gut remodels” can easily take up to two years. By the time the last punch list item is resolved, clients are exhausted, the excitement has worn off, and the process can feel never-ending.

Cosmetic renovations, on the other hand, move at a refreshing pace. The design phase usually takes three to four months, and installation another four to six months. Within this timeframe, the transformation is breathtaking - and the sense of joy and anticipation stays strong from start to finish.

A Seamless Process

During a cosmetic renovation, we carefully coordinate trusted, high-quality trades to handle details such as:

  • Refinishing floors

  • Adding or removing/replacing trim

  • Painting and wallpaper installation

  • Electrical adjustments, if needed

Meanwhile, our custom workroom is hand-crafting draperies, sofas are being built in North Carolina, and curated furnishings are arriving in our warehouse. By the time installation begins, everything is ready to come together beautifully. Four to six months is all it takes to bring the full vision to life.

Cost-Effective and Less Disruptive

Gut remodels are not only longer but also more expensive—much of the budget goes to builders, permits, and structural work. Often, homeowners need to move out temporarily, which means paying rent or extending leases while facing unpredictable delays.

With cosmetic renovations, you don’t need to move out, wait on permits, or deal with excavation. The process is streamlined, efficient, and offers the best return on investment for your design dollar.

Flexibility to Work in Phases

Another advantage is flexibility. Many clients start with two or three rooms, then expand to the rest of the home in phases. This allows for a whole-house transformation over time—without the hassle of relocating.

The Right Fit for the Right Home

Of course, cosmetic renovations are best suited for homes with good bones and a functional layout. When that foundation is in place, cosmetic upgrades can deliver jaw-dropping transformations.

For me, these projects are pure joy. The process stays exciting, my clients love the results, and together we create homes that feel elevated, luxurious, and truly complete.

We handle every little details - no rock left unturn!
